Martin Bodo Plenio

Martin Plenio, obtained his Diploma (1992) and PhD (1994) in Physics from the Georg-August Universität Göttingen. From 1995 - 1997 he was postdoctoral Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Humboldt Foundation at Imperial College in the group of Prof. Sir Peter Knight FRS. He became Lecturer at Imperial College in 1998 , Full Professor of Quantum Physics in 2003 and Programme Director at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 2005. In 2009 he moved to Ulm University with an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship. He has made fundamental contributions to entanglement theory and quantum technologies with atoms, ions and photons and colour centers in diamond, nuclear spin hyperpolarisation as well as the study of quantum effects in biology. His more than 400 papers have received well above 66000 Google Scholar-citations (H-Index 119). He is listed annually as highly cited researcher since 2017. Prizes for his work include: The Maxwell Medal and Prize of the IOP (2004), a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2006), the Clifford Paterson Lecture of the Royal Society of London, an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship (2008), the Max-Born Medal of IOP and DPG (2012), successive European Research Council Synergy grant 2012 and 2019. He is Founder and Managing Director of the Center for Quantum BioSciences and attracted €23Million of funding for a state of the art research building. He is co-founder of a high technology startup NVision Imaging Technologies with more than 75 employees and of QC-Design with more than 15 employees. He holds several patents, all of which have been sold or licensed to companies. Of the more than 60 PhD students and postdocs that he has mentored in his career so far, 43 have achieved permanent academic appointments.
